PJATC Public Service Project – Irish Heritage Center
PJATC Public Service Project – Irish Heritage Center Where you even aware of the fact that Local 567 Apprentices are required to perform 20 hours of service to the community? This could be participation in local organizations that they may already be a part of such as sports teams as coaches or referees, Fire & Rescue departments, Boy/Girl scouting the list could go on. This is a wonderful way to promote good citizenship and it allows the public to witness that union members are part of the local community. Thus dispelling the offense image that anti union /anti –labor organization attempt to smear our members. The list of projects that LU567 Apprentices have participated is a long one. PJATC has assisted in volunteering labor at Habitat for Humanity projects, PROP, Community Concepts and building projects at Riding to the Top Therapeutic Riding Facility. The most current project that the Apprentices are working on is at the Irish Heritage Center, on Gray St. in Portland. This building is a landmark building that dominates the Portland sky line. It is the old St. Dominic’s Catholic Church. One of the great historical building that posses a wealth of history and recently being restored. Thanks to the generousity of many individuals and business in the area this Irish Heritage Center will serve as a cultural and community center, celebrating the Irish culture and it’s history in Maine and continuing to serve the community as well. PJATC Apprentices, with the help of Norris Inc., is installing a Fire Alarm System in this building. This will help to protect and preserve this building and those that are utilizing it. It is a great opportunity for these apprentices to get some practical experience while serving the greater good of our community. Our thanks to Brother Vinny O’Malley, Vinny is leading the charge for the Heritage Center and came to us with the need. Vinny is a union brother, a member of the Long Shore Man’s Union in Portland. The PJATC are working hard to complete this project and if you recognize or are working with any of these apprentices thank them for representing our union, IBEW Local 567. |
