The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) represents approximately 750,000 members who work in a wide variety of fields, including utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. The IBEW has members in both the United States and Canada and stands out among the American unions in the AFL-CIO because it is among the largest and has members in so many skilled occupations. Dear Brothers and Sisters: As the precious summer season winds down and the days grow shorter, it is time to prepare for Labor Day and the chance to celebrate the true meaning of this holiday. While most of America will enjoy the day with back yard barbecues and trips to the beach, we as members of a union should take the time to reflect on the progress that organized labor has made for its brothers and sisters in the past and focus on the need to continue to improve our standard of living with future efforts. It’s my hope that you will be able to attend the Western Maine Labor council picnic at the hall on Sept 1 or some other labor sponsored event on that day and spend some time with fellow union members.
